🔎 What does this group aim to do?
We aim to foster a community of ambitious, careful and committed thinkers and builders focused on effectively tackling some of the world’s most pressing problems through a focus on China’s role in the world.
We currently do this by facilitating action-guiding discussions, identifying talent and community infrastructure gaps and developing new programmes to support impactful China-focused work.
👤 Who is this group for?
- You’re a great fit for this group if you:
- Are excited about using your career to doing the most good
- Value expansive and impartial altruism, rigorous thinking, prioritization and collaboration.
- Have China-focused experience of some kind - you might have grown up in China, worked in a role based in or focused on China, studied aspects of Chinese politics and society or just read a lot in your spare time.
- You might still be a great fit for this group if you have only some of the features listed above, so if you think this might be for you, please just err on the side of applying!

📖 Community programmes
- We are an online-first group that is organized on Slack.
- Community members share job opportunities, resources and tips on a range of topics, from Mandarin language learning to applying for China-focused internships.
- Community members have also initiated many different ways to learn about China, such as a book club.
🎓 Advanced discussion groups
- Our group members have run discussions in the past focused on the intersection of China and issues such as artificial intelligence, biosecurity, nuclear security and great power conflict.
- In the coming months, we will be putting together discussions focused on risks from advanced AI, biosecurity and great power conflict, with a focus on extreme risks.
📊 Project collaborations
- Over the past 2 years, group members have worked on projects to improve our understanding of paths to impact in China-focused careers. This includes:
- Metaculus forecasting - worked with Metaculus to draw up forecasting questions for an upcoming closed China-focused tournament.
- China-focused research skills - conducted a literature review and expert interviews to collect recommendations for skills, practices, and mindsets to bring to China-focused research.
- Risk identification and mitigation - identified important risk management considerations relevant to this space.
- China-focused research institutions database - compiled a list of China-focused institutions, alongside information about whether these institutions offer fellowships and internships.
- We are excited to invite individuals who have ideas for potentially high-impact China-focused projects or would be keen to work on such projects, to join us as we are considering future collaborations on a rolling basis.
💻 China x AI reference list
- We’ve compiled a reference list for people interested in learning more about the intersection of China and AI. You can view that list here: China x AI Reference List
❓ I have questions. Who can answer them?
Here are a couple of questions people typically have. If you have questions that aren’t answered below, feel free to send an email to chinaglobalpriorities@gmail.com
- What does it mean for someone to be China-focused?
- We define this quite broadly to include people who are living or working in China, those who are studying China-related courses, or people who have professional roles that require interaction with individuals and groups in China.
- What are global priorities?
- We are interested in problems that are large in scale, plausibly neglected and potentially tractable. We believe that for problems that come out top of the list as global priorities - risks from AI, biosecurity, climate change, great power conflict, animal welfare, and others - China matters immensely.
- Who are the people running this group and working on projects?
- We are a group of mostly China-focused students and young professionals from different parts of the US, Europe and Asia.
- How many people are in the group?
- Currently we have about 90 people on our Slack.
- Why have I been rejected from the group?
- You might be turned down if we don’t think you’re a great fit for our community. Common reasons this might happen: your interests might fall outside those of our group, you have very little China-focused experience, or you might not be interested in global priorities as our community defines them.
- If you think we have made a mistake, you’re welcome to send us an email. We can’t promise to get back to you quickly but will do our best to respond within a reasonable time frame.
